Banking is not the job for everybody. But for many it proves to be a steady, lucrative career path. These days even most local supermarkets contain a branch of the local bank. The industry is growing and changing with the times, and the days of 9–3 banking are long gone. With an increased emphasis on customer service, banks are now often looking to the younger population seeking entry level employment to staff their counters.

A branch teller, the place where most aspiring bankers begin their careers, needs these days to not only possess the strong math skills to process financial transactions accurately, but also the personality and demeanor to deliver great customer service. As the number of banks grows, so does the competition between them. In an increasingly disconnected age, many people enjoy banking with an institution that can provide a friendly face as well as a great checking account.
While many banks would prefer a teller have a college degree in a related financial field an increasing number are willing to train a candidate who demonstrates the aptitude and ambition to work in the banking environment. Many job listings posted by consumer banks these days do not require that an applicant be educated above the level of high school. Many banks experience a high turnover in their entry level hiring as a number of people find that banking is just not the job for them, and move on to other fields.

Of course, excellent math skills are still required to for any entry level position in banking. No bank can afford to employ a teller who is unable to perform an accurate transaction every time. Inaccurate transactions are not only costly to a banking institution, but can seriously devalue their image in the eyes of their consumers. Neither can they, in this competitive market, retain an employee who is rude or impatient with the customers who come to their window. The worker who can demonstrate they are capable of achieving excellence in this delicate balance of skills is likely to remain employable for life.

There is a large potential for growth for the talented bank clerk. More banks are making a point of offering the option of a personal banker to those customers who desire that level of service. There is also the potential to specialize, for instance becoming a loan or mortgage officer. This will often entail further or continued education, but most banks are willing to assist the motivated candidate to obtain the training they need. More than in many industries the bank employee holds a position of great trust, so once a bank has found an employee who proves to be both talented at the job and highly trustworthy it is unlikely that they will want to let them go, and most encourage promotion from within.

The starting salary for most banking jobs is usually in line with that of an administrative assistant in the average office environment. The pay is usually higher than that of say, the average retail worker. A strong ability to provide excellent customer service is certainly a requirement for the successful bank employee, with the advantage that such a job pays a higher rate than many Customer Service Representatives in other industries, and offers a larger opportunity for career growth and job satisfaction.
