Entry-Level Seismology Jobs

Entry-level seismologists are earth scientists, specialized in geophysics, who study the genesis and the propagation of seismic waves in geological materials. Entry-level seismologists study and interpret seismic data to locate earthquakes and earthquake faults and review, analyze, and interpret data from seismographs and geophysical instruments. They are responsible for establishing existence and activity of faults, and direction, motion, and stress of earth movements before, during, and after earthquakes. They may issue maps or reports indicating areas of seismic risk to existing or proposed construction or development. Their research will aim at interpreting the geological composition and structures of the Earth. Entry-level seismologists evaluate the potential dangers and seek to minimize their impact through the improvement of construction standards, In the case of earthquakes. The responsibility of an entry-level seismologist is to provide tsunami warnings, watches, advisories, and information messages to residents and emergency managers in their serviced area.

An entry-level seismologist requires a bachelor's degree in earth or physical science and the basic understanding of physics, mechanics, and mathematical results of location algorithm. An entry-level seismologist should have mathematical skills, familiarity with operating system, internet connections, and strong communication skills both verbal and written.
