Entry-Level Physics Jobs

Entry-level physicists have a central role in developing, planning, and implementing patient treatment programmes. They also develop, test and evaluate specialist equipment and procedures to benefit patient health. They may also be involved in radiation protection activities. Entry-level physicists should engage in technical procedures, which form part of patient care and treatment, assessing the results of physiological measurement to assess organ function or blood flow. Entry-level physicists plan and supervise radiotherapy treatment in discussion with medical and other staff and work with patients in a range of roles. Entry-level physicists should be liaising closely with doctors to add technical results to patient reports. Entry-level physicists should be training and advising physics technicians on new equipment and protocols. Entry-level physicists undertake audit visits to hospital departments to check compliance with health and safety legislation, including personnel monitoring, decontamination routines, radioactive waste management, and radiation detection advice.

An entry-level physicist should be a graduate with a degree in a physical science. Clinical training within a hospital physics department may be an advantage. An entry-level physicist should have an interest in health care and the functions of the human body and have strong communication skills. Entry-level physicists must be self-motivated and confident and should have a willingness to keep up to date with the latest scientific and medical research in this field and the ability to solve problems and research alternative solutions.
