Highest Unemployment Rate in History for Teens
by Employment Crossing
For many, the last day of school means a time to sleep in or head towards the beach.
For others, it’s a time to make some money!
But the summer 2008 teen job market has been overshadowed by layoffs and cut backs as the economy faces the highest unemployment rate in history.
According to the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University, the teen unemployment rate will not rise above 34%. They added that this is considered to be the worst jobless rate for teens, especially teens in low-income families, in 61 years.
Cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and Boston are reporting an increase in teen crime and gang activity from this out-of-work demographic.
There are a number of reasons why teens will find searching for a job a challenge.
Besides the economy, teens looking for work will also find a lot of competition from recently laid-off workers and college graduates.
According to SnagAJob, managers who do plan on hiring are less than impressed with the work ethic that teens bring to the workplace, saying that “today’s youth do not have the same work ethic as previous generations have had.”
